UN rights chief warns Hebron operation raises concerns of ethnic cleansing
Speaking in Cairo, Secretary-General António Guterres described an increasingly coercive environment for Palestinians. Türk called for the displaced to be allowed home and compensated.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk said Israel's Hebron operation, which had forced more than 3,000 people from their homes, raised serious concerns of ethnic cleansing and amounted to collective punishment.
Türk said the operation had demolished homes and commercial property and restricted residents' movement, UN News reported.
He warned of unnecessary and disproportionate use of force and called for the return of displaced residents, with compensation and reparation.
Guterres, in Cairo, warned that the threat of ethnic cleansing was growing.
The Israeli military said the operation would last several days and was limited to the area the attackers came from.
